Apple seems to be discontinuing its SuperDrive CD reader. As noted by one of our readers, it's no longer possible to buy an Apple USB SuperDrive online via the official Apple Store in the US. Stock remains available on some of Apple's regional stores, such as the UK, and the USB SuperDrive can still be found elsewhere online at retailers like Amazon.

More notably, the USB SuperDrive is one of Apple's longest-selling devices

It's in the same league as the Apple II computer, which also enjoyed a long production run. The USB SuperDrive was first introduced in 2008 alongside the MacBook Air, which was the first Apple laptop to ship without a built-in optical drive. The 2008 MacBook Air didn't have an optical drive, so Apple sold a separate SuperDrive accessory, which has finally seemingly been discontinued.

The discontinuation of the SuperDrive is a sign of the times. Optical drives are becoming increasingly rare in modern computers, as more and more content is being streamed or downloaded online. Even Apple's own MacBooks no longer come with built-in optical drives, and the company has been gradually phasing out the SuperDrive from its lineup of accessories.

If you still need an optical drive, there are still plenty of third-party options available. However, if you're looking for an official Apple product, it looks like the SuperDrive is no more.
